Writing is an art full of imagination, experiences, mindsets, preconceived notions, creativity, etc. Story writing can be divided mainly into four styles. This is just my perception...I hope it suits majority. Focus here is on comics.
1. Stories based on Situations/Scenes -
When a story is based on a simple idea and it contains many new, distinct scenes supporting that idea then it is scenes or situations based story. The story is easy to understand with great flow and pace, usually. Many comics under comedy genre are example of scenes based comedy. The scenes are loosely related. The excitement fluctuates within a limit with change in scenes....so, there is relatively less fuss in reader's mind about the climax and start of such stories.
2. Stories based on Characters -
Every now and then we read introduction of new characters, villains. Though, the story still demands scenes and story plot but such stories are overshadowed by the personality of the character(s). His/Her characteristics, powers, past, motives, alter ego, allies, etc. So, it's like a Bio Data in the form of many frames and pages.
3. Stories based on Ideas -
A story is based on ideas, themes, story plots, according to the universe and storyline of a series. A story plot is a general idea which can be used with many series. But the series which best suits the idea can be chosen by the writer. Now, turn this upside down....I mean if one is only thinking about a series then there is one, clear choice for the theme.
4. Message based Stories -
A story based on special message, moral, teaching. Easy to write and understand but is monotonous, lacks freshness. Best for kids under 14 years.
Also some special occasions, events, declarations, changes, etc in real life can inspire fiction.
